The approach

My default is documentary. I'm happiest when I'm in the room and nobody's thinking about the camera - the toast that goes sideways, your mate's face during the speech, your nan on the dancefloor at midnight.
When it's time for couple portraits, I keep it simple. A good spot, good light, and enough space for you to just be with each other. No shot lists. No twelve-pose sequences. Just a quiet ten minutes where the two of you can breathe.
I won't ask you to "walk towards me slowly" or gaze at each other on command. I'll probably just find somewhere beautiful, tell you a bad joke, and let whatever happens happen.
